Presentation Abstract:

The IT Application Landscape has changed dramatically over recent years from the Mainframes environments to Departmental Applications, followed by the rise of Client/Server applications, large n-tier applications, and more recently Complex Composite Applications based on Service-Oriented Architectures.

Consequently, the IT Production teams responsible for Supporting and Managing Applications are faced with a heterogeneous mix of technologies, each at their own stage of evolution.

Not only do these diverse technologies all have to be supported concurrently in order to deliver the Business benefit, but at the same time the IT Production team is faced with increasing pressures on costs and the need to be client-focused. As a result, there is a need for IT Production Management to take a Strategic, Pro-Active Approach to Supporting Applications in the modern world.

Choosing and Deploying appropriate Software Tools forms part of the solution to these challenges.

The value of Software Tools lies in their ability to enable managers to capture appropriate Metrics to understand where, and how efficiently, the Support Activity is being used.

At the same time, from a Management perspective, it is equally important to introduce the appropriate Processes and Procedures to help allocate scarce resources for managing the modern Support environment.

Finally, there is a need for an Architectural input from IT Production into the development process, to ensure that proposed new applications are "Production Supportable" in future.
